I thought that I’d share a post on some of the short film work I’ve been doing over the past year. I joined a local film group two years ago and since then have been collaborating with several talented local filmmakers. I’ve learned that in many ways, short films can be just as much work as features (at least from a writing point of view). While one of the films is stuck in post and others didn’t come to fruition, it’s been a valuable learning experience and I think that working on shorts has improved my writing overall.
Most recently, I wrote the 25 minute short film, Headwind, for May Yam Studios under the pen name J.M. Campbell. Director May Yam is incredibly talented and she put together an awesome team of actors and crew for this short film, including a cameo by the amazing band Sweet Hayah. Headwind is a heartwarming story about a family’s road trip to fulfill a bucket list item for their terminally ill child. When their fateful journey reaches a crossroad, they are forced to re-evaluate their decisions. The film is being submitted to festivals (which means that the film can’t be posted/shared), but here is the trailer!
Last year, I wrote a short film entitled Resolutions. A ten-minute dramedy about moving on, Resolutions was produced by the local company EAP via a film group that I am a member of, but has gotten held up in post-production. Those of you who work in film know this happens very often. Although I am unsure when/if it will be released, it was a valuable learning experience and I’m still holding out hope that the editing will be completed. The acting, cinematography, and lighting were particularly exceptional. So, I thought that I would post the teaser trailer that was put together here.
As I continue this journey, I will likely continue assisting local filmmakers with their projects. I’m also toying with the idea of directing a short or two over the next coming year. I’ll keep you posted! Thanks for reading!
